Ben Quinn, The Guardian; Harry and Meghan seek global trademark for 'Sussex Royal' brand
"The application covering Australia, Canada, the EU and US was filed
in December with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in
the name of their new foundation, according to details online.
As well as the application to register Sussex Royal – which the couple have been using on their Instagram account and on a website
launched last week as they announced they were “stepping back” as
senior royals – one was also made to register “Sussex Royal the
Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex”.
Six classes were listed in the applications, covering printed matter
such as magazines and greeting cards, clothing ranging from footwear to
pyjamas, charitable fundraising and management, as well as education and
social care services including the organising and conducting of
emotional support groups."

China defends its Trump trademark approvals as in line with law; Reuters, March 10, 2017
Reuters/Jason Lee;
"China's trademark office in recent weeks green-lighted 38 trademark applications linked to Trump, giving the U.S. president and his family protection were they to develop the "Trump" brand in the market.
The ties between politics and business have, however, prompted concern from politicians and rights groups who say the president could face potential conflicts of interest related to the extensive business affairs of his family...
Trump and his family, like many business owners, hold trademarks around the world, from business sectors such as apparel in the Philippines to golf clubs in Australia and property in Japan and South Korea."

Richmond-based Red Eye Cookie Co. gets sued over trademark issue by national cookie delivery chain
"Started by a University of Pennsylvania undergraduate out of his dorm room in 2003, Insomnia Cookies maintains more than 100 stores throughout the country, including locations in Richmond and Charlottesville, among others in Virginia.
According to the suit, Insomnia has used a distinctive design mark since its early days, which prominently features a crescent moon dotted with what appears to be chocolate chips, giving the impression of a cookie with a bite taken out of it.
Red Eye began in March 2014 on West Grace Street near Virginia Commonwealth University’s academic campus. It moved in August 2015 to its current location at 935 W. Grace St., roughly 240 feet from Insomnia Cookies’ own Richmond location, which opened in January 2015.
Red Eye’s logo also features a crescent moon, which is colored dark red.
Each company sells freshly baked cookies, baked goods, milk, coffee and ice cream, and both offer late-night delivery — typically to college students.
The lawsuit states that Insomnia and Red Eye “are very similar, if not identical” and continues that “the companies operate in the same markets; the companies target the same customers; the companies advertise and promote their goods and services in the same or similar media; and Red Eye is using one or more marks that feature a crescent moon design as the dominant design element of those marks.”

Vegas Golden Knights' trademark request denied by U.S. patent office; Associated Press via ESPN, 12/8/16
Associated Press via ESPN; Vegas Golden Knights' trademark request denied by U.S. patent office:
"The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied the Vegas Golden Knights' trademark application a little more than two weeks after the new NHL franchise unveiled its name and logo. The office on Wednesday cited potential confusion with the team name for the College of Saint Rose in New York, which is also the Golden Knights. The Las Vegas franchise is set to take the ice next season... The patent office said the similarities were too many to overlook. "In this case, the marks are identical in part, sharing the same dominant wording and overall commercial impression," the office said in denying the application. "The nature of the applicant's and registrant's services is similar; both offer sports entertainment of a kind available in the same venues, broadcast on television, and are generally available to the same class of consumers. Accordingly, the examining attorney concludes that there is a likelihood of confusion between the applicant's and registrant's marks.""

McGregor beaten to the punch as 'IP squatter' files trademark claim; Irish Independent, 9/18/16
Simon Rowe, Irish Independent; McGregor beaten to the punch as 'IP squatter' files trademark claim:
"Tabassum Gazala Khan has gone on a spending spree since July in an apparent bid to acquire valuable commercial IP linked to the UFC star. Ms Khan spent €3,150 applying for an EU trademark for 'Conor McGregor The Notorious' - just days after shelling out Stg£500 (€590) on three UK trademark applications for 'The Notorious Conor McGregor', 'Conor The Notorious McGregor' and 'Conor McGregor The Notorious'. She has also registered the following websites: conormcgregor thenotorious.com, conorthenotoriousmcgregor.com and thenotoriousconormcgregor.net The EU trademark application covers 17 classes of IP, which would enable Ms Khan to cash in on McGregor's name on products including aftershave, computer games, mugs and beer. Legal experts predict McGregor will apply immediately to have the application declared invalid on the basis of 'bad faith'."
