Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing.net; Weird Al snubbed by Lady Gaga, releases his parody without permission as fair use:
"Lady Gaga denied Weird Al the right to release his parody of BORN THIS WAY, only the second time in his career that he's been denied [ed: the other refusal came from Prince]."
Issues and developments related to IP, AI, and OM, examined in the IP and tech ethics graduate courses I teach at the University of Pittsburgh School of Computing and Information. My Bloomsbury book "Ethics, Information, and Technology", coming in Summer 2025, includes major chapters on IP, AI, OM, and other emerging technologies (IoT, drones, robots, autonomous vehicles, VR/AR). Note the update:
"The ensuing hoo-hah seems to have swayed Ms Gaga, who has authorised the inclusion of PERFORM THIS WAY on Weird Al's album."
And on Weird Al's blog, he informs readers that Lady GaGa never even heard the song in the first place. Her manager passed on it without even consulting her.

Also, a correction...James Blunt's record label denied Weird Al, too. And one of the commenters @ Boing Boing advises that the Offspring denied Weird Al a parody in the past, too. Another commenter says that Yankovic has been denied by Jimmy Page, Paul McCartney, and Eminem.
