The Pangram Backlash Unfolding on College Campuses; The Atlantic, September 21, 2026

Will Oremus, The Atlantic; The Pangram Backlash Unfolding on College Campuses

"Four years into the ChatGPT era, colleges may be further from solving AI cheating than they were when it launched. Chatbots are becoming capable of completing ever more complex assignments, making their output harder for professors to sniff out. AI-detection software has improved dramatically and is hitting the mainstream, yet academia is deeply conflicted over its use. Last month, an MIT working group issued an influential report on AI in education that recommended against relying on AI detectors, warning that they risk creating an “atmosphere of distrust between instructors and students.”

Caught in the middle are professors, many of whom are skeptical of these tools but at a loss for what else to do."

Google Just Ruined One of Its Most Important Tools; The Atlantic, July 31, 2026

Matteo Wong, The Atlantic; Google Just Ruined One of Its Most Important Tools

"Before it allowed people to create fake imagery, Google Earth was a unique resource for researchers, journalists, and intelligence officials, particularly those studying armed conflict and natural disasters. Satellite and aerial imagery can be used to monitor crop failure or deforestation, the creation of mass graves, and the results of bombing campaigns. Especially in conflict zones and other areas that are hard for people to reach, satellite imagery is a go-to method for establishing some sort of ground truth. After Google Earth rolled out the AI feature, though, one investigative reporter wrote on LinkedIn that the tool could be used to easily and rapidly create images of drone strikes that look “very close to what we’ve seen in Ukraine, Russia, the Middle East, and other war-torn conflict zones.” And instead of requiring malicious actors to find a screenshot and then get around some AI model’s safeguards, Google rolled everything needed for a misinformation farm into one smooth user interface. It took me all of four seconds to generate a rendering of a Trump Hotel on the Gaza Strip."

The AI vibe shift is real: Why the backlash is growing; Mashable, June 6, 2026

Chris Taylor, Mashaable; The AI vibe shift is real: Why the backlash is growing

"But outside the AI bubble, a backlash is brewing, and not only among students booing pro-AI commencement speakers.

Just 10 percent of Americans say they're thrilled about the future of AI, a Pew poll found in March; that same month, some 80 percent of registered U.S. voters in an NBC poll said neither Democrats nor Republicans are doing a good job on the AI front. That number also appears in an April survey of white-collar workers: 80 percent are straight-up refusing to use AI even when it's mandated. In the last 30 days, 54 percent of workers reported bypassing company AI tools and completing jobs themselves.

Those numbers suggest general strike-levels of discontent with AI across every industry, out there in the real America beyond Silicon Valley and Wall Street, if not an outright revolutionary mood.

Data center protests, fueled by the 70 percent of Americans who say they don't want data centers near them, are only likely to grow going forward — especially now that they are producing tangible results. At least 48 data center projects were blocked or delayed in 2025, according to Data Center Watch, and the fight is only getting more fierce."
